Abstract

1381075 Coating and sealing glass NCR CORP 21 May 1973 [22 May 1972 7 July 1972 28 Aug 1972] Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A gas discharge display device (see Division H1) is manufactured by silk screeening a pattern of main electrodes 2<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> and input electrodes i<SP>1</SP> on to a glass substrate 12<SP>1</SP>, preferably of soda lime glass about 3 mm. thick using a plate of glass mixed with silver which is then fired in a furnace. Alternatively tin oxide may be coated on the substrate and then etched to provide the electrode pattern. A coating 18<SP>1</SP> consisting of 75% lead oxide glass, boron oxide and aluminium oxide is then provided in paste form and fired. A layer 1211 containing cavities 13<SP>1</SP> is next silk-screened with a crystallizing glass paste which turns opaque when fired. A second substrate 16<SP>1</SP> is provided in the same manner with main electrodes 1<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, output electrodes e<SP>1</SP>, coating 18<SP>1</SP> and layer 1211 and substrates 12<SP>1</SP> and 16<SP>1</SP> are then sealed together using a fired glass paste to form an enclosure in which the cavities 13<SP>1</SP> are filled with gas through an aperture (not shown) provided in substrate 12<SP>1</SP>.
