Abstract

1409388 Sealing holes in glass NCR CORP 10 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 57127/73 Heading C1M In a method of producing a sealed gas filled envelope, an envelope 10 is formed with a tapered access hole 12; a fusible plug 15 is placed in the hole, the plug 15 being shaped so that when in the hole 12 it still allows the passage of gas therethrough; evacuating the envelope 10 and filling with the required gas through the hole 12; and fusing the plug 15 thereby sealing the hole 12. Preferably the plug is provided with minute surface irregularities to allow gases to enter or leave the envelope when the plug is in the access hole. The envelope is formed of glass and the plug may be of glass or a low melting point metal or alloy. In this latter case a bonding material, e.g. silver paste is applied to the access hole before evacuation, filling and sealing operations.
