Abstract

1395848 Railway vehicles SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK 26 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 35590/73 Heading B7L A railway locomotive has a frame 1 supported by a bogie 3 with driven axles 5, traction forces being transmitted to the frame by rods 6 located in a vertical plane at an angle 2 to the horizontal and which intersect at rail level, a tension being produced in each rod, which together are greater than the tension produced by the driving forces, by a spring 12 acting through pivoted double arm levers 10 which with an increase in tension in one rod produce an equal reduction in tension of the other rod and which also produce equal but opposite movement of one rod in response to movement of the other. In Fig. 2 spring 23 tensions rods 24, 26 by acting on double arm levers 21, 22 indirectly, via rod 25, and directly respectively, the rods 24, 26 being pivoted to a rod 27 by connections disposed on shoes 30 which can slide on the underside of bogie 3. Rod 27 has a bearing ring 28 which embraces a pivot 29 enabling the bogie to rotate. The rods may be tensioned by hydraulic cylinders (Fig. 3, not shown), interconnected by lines to the chambers of a cylinder having a stepped bore and a differential piston whose two faces are of equal size the piston being biased by mechanical or hydraulic means. An existing locomotive may have a compensating system fitted to it by the addition of a parallelogram linkage, Fig. 5, which produces the tension in the rods by the pair of springs 49, or in a modification by a single hydraulic cylinder.
