Abstract

1326406 Track brakes mounted on rail vehicle UNDERGROUND MINING MACHINERY Ltd 20 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45538/70 Heading F2E A railway vehicle, preferably incorporated in a railway system including a track comprising a pair of spaced rails on which are supported the vehicle's load-bearing wheels, has at least one brake mechanism comprising a cylinder and piston unit, each of which is connected with a respective one of a pair of brake pads and is movable relative to the vehicle frame, the unit when pressurized holding the pads in inoperative positions in which they define a narrow gap substantially in line with and below the level of the wheels on on side of the vehicle, and means biasing the pads towards each other. As shown, a bogie of an underground mineworking vehicle is supported at each end on rails R by a pair of wheels 12, adjacent to which are pairs of horizontal wheels 3. Between the wheels 3 at each side a support plate 32, secured to two piston rods 36, is located under the upper rail flange F and carries a brake pad 34. A brake pad 35 carried by a support plate 33 secured to a cylinder assembly 37 is located above flange F. In the inoperative position shown, pressure fluid above pistons 39 serves to compress disc springs 40 and maintain pads 34, 35 clear of flange F. On relief of pressure either intentionally or accidentally, (e.g. punctured hose), springs 40 raise the pistons and lower the cylinder assembly to apply the brake. Downward movement of the cylinder assembly is opposed at each side of it by spring 47 in a fixed housing through the connection lug 44, bolt 45 and an upper abutment 48. (Upward movement of the cylinder assembly is opposed by the same spring through a lower abutment 48). The vertical location of assembly 37 relative to the bogie is adjustable by nuts 46.
