Abstract

1415915 Track brakes mounted on rail vehicles UNDERGROUND MINING MACHINERY Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [16 Jan 1973] 2198/73 Addition to 1326406 Heading F2E A railway vehicle has at least one brake mechanism, the or each mechanism comprising a piston and cylinder unit 37 supported for movement relative to the vehicle in a substantially horizontal direction, e.g. by two guide members 102 each welded to one side of the unit and slidable between two horizontal ways 101 fitted to one of two brackets 100 bolted to the chassis; each of the components of a unit 37 is connected to one of a pair of brake pads 34, 35, and is movable relative to the vehicle; when the unit is pressurized the brake pads are held in the inoperative positions shown, while means such as springs bias the brake pads towards each other below one of the load-bearing wheels 12 so as to grip head H of the rail when operative. Preferably the construction and arrangement of unit 37 including pad support plates 32, 33, are as described in the main Specification 1,326,406. Preferably also a guide bar 103 is welded to each side of unit 37, each guide bar having a fixed axle 105 supporting a horizontal guide wheel 104 and an axle 107 supporting a guide wheel 106, axle 107 being located in a block 108 urged towards the rail by a spring 110. This arrangement ensures that in the "broken off" position the clearance between brake pads and rail is maintained constant despite lateral movement of the vehicle relative to the rail.
