Abstract

1,058,847. Alternative road/rail vehicles. MARTIN BEILHACK, MASCHINENFABRIK UND HAMMERWERK G.m.b.H. May 4, 1964 [May 18, 1963]. No. 18394/64. Heading B7H. A vehicle is provided with pneumatic tyred wheels at a gauge suitable for travelling upon railway lines, guides 10 being provided for retaining the vehicle upon the lines. The guides 10, Fig. 3, slide along the side of the rail or move with a small clearance therebetween, and are secured to a support 8 which also carries a member 16, Fig. 10, which rests upon the top surface of the rail and takes the vehicle weight in the event of a puncture. The supports 8 are carried by springs 7 mounted by members 4. 6 upon the vehicle body or upon a movable part of the suspension of steered wheels. A bridge piece 13 connects laterally opposite mounting 6 and a slotted member 15 connects laterally opposite springs. Springs 7 on the same side of the vehicle are connected by a member 14. The vertical part of the guide member 10 may comprise a vertically displaceable portion which may be connected to a skid shoe. As shown in Fig. 10, the vertically displaceable portion 19 is connected to a skid shoe equipped with bearing rollers 27. The axle 32, Fig. 14, may have members adjustable vertically by screw-threads or hydraulic means which bear against springs 33 having the same spring rate as the tyres at a given pressure, a resilient pad 36 being interposed between the vehicle and the spring which is pivoted at 35 to the body and is connected at its other end to the guide member 10, a vertical guide device 34 being provided. In an alternative construction, the guide member may be mounted on the vehicle chassis, in which case the vehicle springs are rendered inoperative by means of screwthreaded members engaging rubber buffers, or by means of hydraulic rams, interposed between the vehicle axle and the vehicle frame (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown).
