Abstract

1389989 Sailing vessels P G VICARD 3 Sept 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 41355/73 Headings B7M and B7V The boom 8 of a mainsail 5 is pivoted at a point 9 remote from the mast 3 so that the latter does not interfere aerodynamically with the function of the sail. The boom 8 is pivoted to a further boom 10 which is in turn pivoted to the mast at 11. The boom 9 is adjustably secured in position by sheets 12 and 13. The jib sail 16 is similarly pivoted at a point 21 remote from its front edge. Halyards 4 and 18 run inside the mast. Bolt ropes at the fronts of the sails may be enclosed by folds of sail cloth for aerodynamic efficiency, Fig. 3 (not shown). The arrangement may be applied to a land yacht; but in the case of a marine yacht, drift and heeling may be inhibited by enclosing the keel 24 and rudder 25 in thin resilient casings 26 which are perforated to allow the casing interior to communicate with the water. If the keel or rudder tends to move sideways, the casing separates at one side to give a correcting crosssectional shape.
