Abstract

612,193. Sails. COATES, W. W. WELLS-. May 17, 1946, Nos. 14984 and 25532. [Class 115] A sail rig comprises a revolvable mast 20 of aerofoil cross section as seen in Fig. 5 and a mainsail composed of a number of separate sail cloths 29 joined at their adjacent edges by battens 30. Numerous methods are described for attaching the sail cloths to the battens. A rope 36 is provided for adjusting the flexure of the battens as required. At their forward ends the battens diverge into arms 40, each carrying rollers 42 which cooperate with tracks 44 and 45 in the mast. Resilient plates 26 are provided as shown to close the gap between the mast and the luff of the sail, and flaps 66 to close the gap between the sail and the deck. Fig. 10 shows one of many methods described for stowing the sail, 63 being the inner member of the telescopic boom 60. The rig also comprises a foresail 80 as shown in Fig. 1, and a sliding gunter may be provided, together with the usual halyard 53 operated from a winch 54.
