Abstract
921,723. Sails. G. K. BENNETT, and P. K. SAUNDERS. May 8, 1961 [Sept. 7, 1960], No. 30800/60. Class 115. A fore and aft rigged sailing vessel has a bipod main mast S, foresails 1 and 2 and mainsails 3 and 4 and has means for varying the effective area of the sails by rolling or unrolling them about their leading edges. The foresails are supported at their leading edges by luff wires 1a and 2a which are rotatably connected to the deck at 23 and swivel clip 10 on forestay 8 and to the mast 11 and swivel bearing 61 on forestay 9 respectively. The luff wires may be rotated automatically or manually to furl or unfurl the sails. The mainsails are supported at their leading edges by luff-wires 3a and 4a attached to rotary gears 21 and 22 and swivel bearings 19 and 59 respectively. The mainsails are attached by sheets 7 to a mizzen mast 6. An alternative embodiment is provided with only one mainsail and the sails have clews which may be hauled out along booms. A pair of jaws may be disposed on the mast to restrain lateral movement of the mainsail luff wire.
