Abstract
1,217,587. Masts and sails. WILHELM PROLSS. 11 April, 1968 [22 April, 1967], No. 17435/68. Heading B7V. A square-rigged sailing vessel has a hollow mast rigidly supporting curved yards 10 and rotatably mounted by bearings 4 and 5 in the vessel 2, the lower end of the mast between the bearings being inclined towards the bow of the vessel, as shown, so that the mast can be rotated to stay vertical when the vessel heels. Rollers 17 in the mast are connected to the sails 16 by inhaulers 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, and sheets 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, so that the sails can be rolled on or off the rollers through a front slot in the mast for reefing or setting the sails. The height of the sail is less at its centre than at its ends, and the bolt ropes attached to the sail edges are wound helically on the rollers, downwardly for the lower edge and upwardly for the upper edge of the sail, a pivoted guide controlling the bolt rope movement, Fig. 5 (not shown). The sheets 18, 18<SP>1</SP> run over spring-loaded pulley assemblies, Fig. 7 (not shown). The bolt ropes are guided in slots in the yards and may comprise a rope on either side of the sail edge sandwiching the edge between them, or a T-section plastics member attached to the sail edge.
