Abstract
1336192 Raising jib sails HOOD SAILMAKERS Inc 16 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 53040/71 Heading B7V The luff of a jib sail 15 has a bead 16 so that it can be retained within a stainless steel forestay 13 of C-shaped cross-section. The opening of the C-section is relatively wide at the lower end of the stay (Fig. 3) to allow the bead to enter the stay interior. Two part spherical guide members 31 and 33 are held by a bracket 27 at the lower part of the stay 13 so that during raising of the sail the bead approaches the stay at a shallow angle to inhibit binding of the bead in the entrance to the stay. For the same reason, a C-shaped guide member 45 is provided and is secured to the boat by a flexible link 47. The bead 16 may be formed by a plastics rod located within a sailcloth tape which is sewn to the luff of the sail proper. To reduce friction between the bead and the tube, the tape may include threads of polytetrafluoroethylene. The rod may be wrapped with double -backed adhesive tape to avoid relative sliding of the rod and sail. In modifications (not shown) the bead guide members 31 and 33 may be replaced by wheels or rollers.
