Abstract

1362126 Sailing vessels BRITTON YACHT SYSTEMS Inc 2 Nov 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 50570/72 Heading B7V A pair of wing sails has a common furling roller 10 which can be releasably secured to the deck in alternative positions allowing the sails to be used as wind sails or to be superimposed and used as a single jib or stay sail. As illustrated, the roller 10 is secured in its rearmost position for wing sail use. In operation, the lower ends of poles 12 and 13 are released from the life lines and the poles are lowered down the mast. The free ends of the poles are then secured to the clews 14 and 15 of the unfurled sails to give the wing layout as shown in Fig. 2. If the roller is secured in its foremost position 18 and the clews are secured together so that the two sails are superimposed, the arrangement functions as a jib sail, Figs. 4-7 (not shown). If the roller is secured in position 19, then the partially unfurled, superimposed sails function as a staysail, Figs. 8-10 (not shown).
