Abstract

888,132. Sails; yards and masts. PROLSS, W. July 26, 1960, No. 25908/60. Class 115. In a sailing ship having square-rigged masts turnable about their vertical axes and upon which curved yards 3 are rigidly disposed to lie perpendicular to such axes, the masts are of at least three strut (1) construction of which the two struts to which the yards are secured are so inclined that the axis of rotation of the mast passes through the C.G. of the mast and its auxilliary ports and that the surface of the sail 9, Fig. 2a, is vertical during heeling of the ship, the sails are furlable and horizontally guided between the yards, and the movement of the masts, yards and sails is remotely controlled. The pivot axis 8 of the mast, Fig. 2c, is inclined in the direction of motion of the ship and turning is effected by a pivot mounting 5, Fig. 1, comprising a fixed ring connected to the hull structure 6, a rotatable ring and rollers 7. After completion of the turning of the mast the drive is relieved hydraulically or mechanically by pressure elements 16 and the mast locked. Jackstays serving to guide the inwardly furled sails are adjustably and resiliently secured to the yards or the sails themselves are adjustably secured by rigid or resilient tighteners to the rigid jackstays. Combined cable winches 46, 47, Fig. 5, are used for setting and furling the sails. In the remote control system the movements are completed by limit switches and follow-up means and at the control desk the positions of the masts, yards and sails are represented by means of fixed and movable symbols and signal lamps.
