Abstract

The sails are made from panels (13) which have parallel sides and a high aspect ratio. The panels are supported against a mast (14) and have some horizontal ties (16) to hold them to the mast. The panels are supported from a boom (15). The panels are capable of rotating about their longitudinal vertical axes, and each may be altered by a different amount, so that the combined sail may have a curved appearance. A control system may be regulated automatically from a central point on the vessel. The sails may be distributed along the centre line of the vessel which may have several masts.
