Abstract

1,007,681. Sails; yards and masts. P. K, SAUNDERS, and G. K. BENNETT. May 15. 1963, No. 19350/63. Heading B7V. A lateen rigged sailing vessel comprises a bipod mast 3, a substantially straight yard 4 supported by the mast, and a sail 11 suspended from a stay 9 which extends from one end of yard 4 to the other between the legs of the bipod mast 3. As shown, the yard 4 is held straight by bracing wires 5 and struts 5a. The yard is pear-shaped and is free to swivel about its axis (Fig. 8, not shown). Stay 9 is rotatable to enable sail 11 to be furled about it. The foot of the sail is spread by an outhaul 12 attached to boom 13 which is pivoted at 14. The bipod mast 3 is secured by a bracket structure (Fig. 4, not shown) which is itself secured to the hull 1.
