Abstract

185,964. Brabazon, J. T. C. Moore-. Sept. 22, 1921. Sails; masts.-The mast 1 is of stream-line cross-section and is capable of rotation about the longitudinal axis either of a lower circular portion secured to the keel or of a fixed mast about which the stream-line section rotates as a sleeve. The sail is fitted with battens 7 having enlarged ends 8 which work in a longitudinal groove of keyhole section cut in the mast. The boom, fitted with king-posts 12 and straining wires 13 so that it may be given any desired curvature, is either jointed directly to the mast at 4 or to a strap encircling the mast. In some cases, the strap is given a loose fit so that the mast is capable of a greater amplitude of rotation. In a modification, the stream-line mast is in sections divided in planes at right-angles to the turning-axis and the gaff, sail, and boom are connected to the sections so that the corresponding sections will be turned through varying angles appropriate to the angles taken up by the gaff, sail, and boom.
