Abstract

140,071. Ljungstrom, F. March 8, 1919, [Convention date]. Rigging; masts.-Sailing vessels with a single fore-and-aft sail are provided with a mast which pivots in a fore-and-aft direction. By adjusting the inclination of the mast, the centre of pressure of the wind on the sail may be varied to prevent the boat lying more or less heavily on her rudder when sailing close to the wind. The mast 2 carrying the sail 3 is provided with a ball- and-socket joint 13 where passing through the deck 12 and also with an extension having rollers 14 running on curved bars 15. The inclination of the mast is varied by operating, either directly or from the cockpit 11, the winch 8 having drums around which the stays 4, 5 are wound in opposite directions.
