Abstract
140,072. Ljungstrom, F. March 8, 1919, [Convention date]. Sails.-Laths for sails are given a curved shape and are disposed so that the lath for each angular position of the boom assumes a position wherein its curvature corresponds to the natural bulge of the sail. The laths 1, preferably of circular cross section, are shaped as shown in Fig. 1 with the vertex of the curve located nearer the luff than the leech of the sail. The laths are disposed in loose pockets 4 and a protecting sheath of pliable material may be placed between the lath and the pockets. The ends of the lath may abut on disked members 6 attached to the luff and leech respectively, and the length of the laths may be adjusted to vary the bulge of the sail. When in use, the lath tends to flatten and to ride up to the top of the pockets 4.
