Description

RBBPING sAILs.
No. 253,371. Patented Feb. 7,1882.
I a /TTUTT ffm @M1/2M* wma/Q 1),. Mr/6%? UNITED STATES WILLIAM N. GRISWOLD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.`
PATENT OFFICE.
REEHNG sAlLs.
SPECIFICATION form-ing part of Letters Patent No. 253,371, dated February '7, 1882.
To all 'whom it may concern i Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. GnIswoLD, of. New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Reef-Booms, of
.which the following is ainll, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letterslof reference marked thereon. c
My invention has relation to means for facilitating and assisting'in shortening and carrying sail on fore-and-afters and other craft;
and the objects of my invention are to render,
'consists essentially in the application to the sail of what I denominate my reef-boom, and the proper or necessary ad j uncts for Inoving the same, all of which will be herein firstV fully described, and then pointed ont in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, I have shown a fore-andai't sail with in y improvements applied thereto. This illustration, in connection with 'the following explanations, will be found sufiicient to enable others skilled in the art to practice my invention. f
. nary form and construction.
srs
A is the mast; B, the top-mast; O, the main- I boom, and D the'gaff. These are of the ordi- Sis th'e sail. At the close-reef band or other part of the sailabove the foot I apply the reef-boom E,
the same being secured to or connected with the sail,.for which purposeV the sail may be separated and fitted to be stoppered to the reef-boom; or a pocket may be formed in the sail at thedesired location, and made to rel ceive the reef boom, substantially as indicated in the drawing. Other meansof connecting the reef-boom and sail maybe adopted. Thev reef-boom E should be made of the best material for the purpose and of no greater weight and strength than are needed to take the bulgestrain of the sail when full of wind. Under ordinary circumstances a diameterof. about onethird that of the main-boomv will be found sufficient for all required purposes.
The reefing of a fore-and-aft sail, especially in rough weather, is a difcult piece of work,
Application filed December 5, 1881. (No model.)
usually requiring all hands, not infrequently y accompanied by danger or accident, and con-v suming much valuable time.- With my improved reef-boom the watch on deck can close-reef the sail very easily and quickly. All thatis necessary is to lul' and shake the sail, lower a little on the throat-halyards F'- and peak-'halyards G, and then set the reefboom well down on the main-boom with the reef-gigs H-H properly applied upon the two booms, pass the necessary number of lashings .around the two boomsswny upon the throat and peak halyards, and reset the sail. The reef-gigs H H may be convenientlyunited allter passing the last block on the main-boom, so as to form a single line, H', as indicated, and for the purpose of facilitating manipulation, as will be readily understood The reefboom being rigid, and being connected with the sail, obviates bulging` toa great and benecial extent, holding the sail iiat, allowing the vessel to lie closer to the Wind, and also enabling the'vessel to carry sail in threatening weather for a greater length of time with perfect safety.
Tlieimprovement is applicable to old sail as well as new. No aller-ations are required, only theadditions necessary to worlr the reef-boom.
When constructed and arranged'to operate in accordance with the foregoing explanations the improved arrangement will be found to admirably answer the several purposes and objects ofthe invention, as previously stated, and not to interfere in any manner with the proper working of the sail. y
More than one reef-boom may be applied to the sail, if desired.
Having now -fully described my invention,
wgf N. GEIswoLD.
