Abstract

1307161 Ships, rudders A MILESSA 11 Jan 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 1227/71 Heading B7V A rudder comprises a sheet 2 of woven flexible inextensible material attached at its forward edge to rod 1, which is fixed to the ship, and at its trailing edge to rod 9 which is attached to the rudder stock by crank-arm 3. With the rudder stock positioned straight the sheet is under tension but with the stock at an angle (Fig. 3) the sheet slackens to improve lift. Steel cable under tension may replace rods 1, 9.
