Abstract
1406240 Aerofoil M J MENEAR 19 Jan 1973 [20 Oct 1971] 48780/71 Heading B7W An aircraft has an aerofoil having surfaces formed by flexible sheets C, D constrained at their leading and trailing edges so that the sheets are free to adopt a curvature and aerofoil configuration dictated by the prevailing pressure conditions. The sheets are attached at B to spar A, which is rigid or semi-rigid, e.g. inflatable, and may be rotatable, and at the trailing edge to the same or separate spars or cables E. These may be movedtowards the leading edgespar A to adjust sheet tension, either together, Figs. 2C, 2D (not shown) or separately, Fig. 3B (not shown), and may be rotatable in an arc centred on the leading edge, Figs. 4A-4D (not shown). Separate trailing edge constraints E 1 , E 2 may be movable apart, Figs. 5A-5D (not shown). The sheets may be stiffened by flexible battens. The aerofoil may have trailing edge cables (M<SP>1</SP>) attached to a rocker beam (0<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 10 (not shown) for roll control.
