Abstract

1,153,056. Sails. L. J. COOK. 17 Jan., 1968 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 46333/66. Headings B7S and B7V. A sail incorporates an inflatable chamber along its luff edge, the inflated chamber giving the luff an aerofoil shaping i.e. a rounded leading surface merging at the back into converging surfaces. The sail of Fig. 1 has at its luff edge a pocket 1 into which is inserted from the bottom and drawn up by a string 10 an inflatable bag 3 (Fig. 3) having front and rear compartments 6, 7 inflatable separately through valves 8 and 9. The inflated chamber prevents capsizing of the craft beyond the mast touching the water. Sliders 12 attached to the luff edge engage a track 14 on the mast 13 are attached to a halyard passing through holes 15. The slides 12 may be of any desired length according to the space required between the sail and the mast. If no space is desired the mast may have a groove which receives and is complementary to the rounded luff edge of the sail.
