Abstract

1382101 Electroless plating E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 21 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3088/72 Heading C7F An electroless plating bath, e.g. Ni-P or Ni-B, containing particles of e.g. oxides,.carbides, nitrides, silicides, borides, diamonds or metallic or intermetallic compounds is continuously circulated, and the substrates are tumbled in the bath. The substrates may be, e.g. plastics, ceramic or metal, e.g. steel, and when plastics may be etched in chromosulphuric acid and contacted with Sn and Pd ions. As shown in Fig. 1, the plating solution and particles are fed by a pump 15 into a funnel 10 containing the substrates 14 and returned through ports 12 to a funnel 11. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) for buoyant articles the funnel 10 is inverted. In a modification Figs. 3A and 3B (not shown) three interconnected plating baths are used for sequential plating. In a further modification Fig. 4 (not shown) the baths are formed by weirs in a trough of V cross-section. A single plating bath may have a spiral baffle Figs. 5a and 5b (not shown). A bath comprises (g.1.) nickel acetate 50, sodium citrate 25, lactic acid 25, dimethylamine borane 2.5, thiodiglycollic acid 0À1 and wetting agent 0À1.
