Abstract
1346273 Electroless plating of plastics DR ING MAX SCHLOTTER 26 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 25098/72 Heading C7F Prior to coating plastics material with metals by electroless or electrolytic methods, the surface of the plastics material is exposed to an atmosphere containing SO 3 . The SO 3 can be mixed with a carrier gas, e.g. air, O 2 , N 2 , CO 2 or rare gases, but the preferred source of SO 3 is fuming H 2 SO 4 (oleum). The plastics material is exposed to SO 3 for between 1 second to 20 minutes at a temperature between 30‹C. and 130‹C. After treatment with SO 3 , the plastics surface may be activated by a solution of PdCl 2 , Pd(NO 3 ) 2 or AgNO 3 in HCl, H 2 SO 4 or ammonia salt, sensitized by a solution of SnCl 2 in HCl, and reduced by a solution of N-diethylamino borazane or formaldehyde. In examples, various plastics are coated with Ni or Cu by electroless deposition, and the coating thus obtained may be subsequently electroplated with Ni, Cu, Ag, Au, Sn, Cd or Zn. One of the electroless Ni baths contains nickel chloride, sodium acetate, sodium citrate, the sodium salt of methylene bisnaphthyl sulphonic acid and diethylamino borane.
