Abstract
1376370 Highway crash barriers ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE SA 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 47475/ 72 Heading E1G In a crash barrier each of the posts 20 supporting an end-anchored rail length 10 is movably connected - as by a transverse pivot 21-to the rail 10 and has its lower end held slidably between lateral faces of a channelshaped ground-anchored socket 30 extending parallel to the rail so that if a vehicle hits a post 20 the post can swing upwardly to avoid excessive damage. The bottom of the socket 30 may be dished. As shown the rail 10 comprises a corrugated metal rail of inverted U section filled with plastics foam, and each post is pivoted in a sheet metal pocket 11 adhered within the rail; on impact the post swings up into the pocket-e.g. against the resistance of sand &c in the channel-socket 30. Each post may have an individual socket; alternatively a series of posts may seat in a continuous ground-anchored channel-e.g. of concrete, cast iron or coated steel.
