Abstract

1453077 Energy absorbing crash barrier ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICHDUDELANGE SA ARBED 19 Oct 1973 [21 Oct 1972] 48953/73 Heading E1G In order to prevent excessive damage to a vehicle colliding with a fixed roadside object such as a bridge pier or (as shown) the end of a crash barrier rail 13, an array of fixed deformable upright bodies such as bendable metal or plastics tubes 15 is disposed in the likely path of a colliding vehicle so that the vehicle is decelerated as successive bodies are run over, each body having a peripheral portion below ground and the bodies being so constructed or arranged that they provide increasing resistance to the vehicle as it approaches the fixed object. The tubes 15 shown upstand from sockets having a common cover plate 20 overlying base concrete 22, being clustered closely around the barrier end 13 but becoming more sparse and of smaller height and diameter further away. Each tube 15 may be filled with foam plastics and may be plastics coated. The tubes in an array may be interconnected by deformable walls (30) of corrugated sheeting, Fig. 8 (not shown) and such an array may be enveloped by a casing (38). Figs. 9-11 (not shown) illustrate a barrier end (13) protected by an array of upright deformable bodies of trapezium or hexagon crosssection, optionally filled with foam plastics (16') and formed by one or more groundembedded walls of corrugated sheeting.
