Abstract

1337271 Crash barriers W A TITTERRELL 19 April 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 834/70 Heading E1G A deformable crash barrier is built up from a series of overlapping similar units each comprising a support 10 carrying at least one horizontal curved or angled arm 14 of deformable material (e.g. steel or plastics) bent in a horizontal plane, the units being arranged in a series, Fig. 3, with their inner portions 16 parallel and their outer portions 22 aligned and marginally overlapped to form a barrier rail spaced transversely from the row of spaced supports 10. The overlapping portions 22 are preferably connected by shear bolts 30. Each support 10 may comprise a tubular post mounted directly in a concrete foundation or in a block 12, or in a socket therein. The posts shown carry opposed arms 14 providing two barrier rails for a central reservation between traffic lanes 25. In modifications each post carries (a) a single arm (b) two arms formed from a single sheet or (c) arms formed from flat rather than corrugated sheet.
