Abstract
1396301 Railings; crash barriers BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO LTD 24 May 1972 [20 April 1971] 10042/71 Headings E1B and E1G A crash barrier railing, particularly for use as a parapet at the edges of bridges and high level roads, comprises at least two tubular or other rigid rails 13A, 14A supported by a plurality of posts 12 which are anchored at their bases and are arranged to yield or break under transverse load before the rails break so that transverse impact loads are transmitted longitudinally to anchorages X incorporated in the railing at its ends or at intervals along its length, each such anchorage comprising two closely-spaced uprights 12 connected by at least one structural member 32 different from the rails. The shear plates 32 shown are stiffened by attachment to the rails or the ground. The hollow posts 12 may be built up from aluminium extrusions and be welded to aluminium base castings bolted to concrete foundations; the rails may comprise tubular aluminium extrusions or steel channels. In modifications the shear plates 32 are replaced by studs or stays, or by a plate 41, Fig 5, stiffened by flanges, Fig 6 (not shown), and by a box beam 40 supporting a terminal roadside crash barrier rail 34. The rail 34 is not described in detail but includes posts 36 and tension devices 37.
