Abstract

991,522. Crash barriers; lamp posts. F. N. PLATT. May 16, 1963, No. 19569/63. Headings E1B and E1G. [Also in Division F2] An energy absorbing crash barrier 10 comprising inner 26 and outer 24 shells secured to a base 14 by a tension member 30 extending between the base and a cap 38 has the space between the shells filled with a fluid material 28. The shells and cap may be of metal, plastic or wood and the fluid material sand, gravel, liquid or gas. Additional energy absorption may be provided by ribs 40 under the cap and by stiffeners 32, 34 in the inner shell. The barriers 10 may be used on the approaches to rigid roadside obstructions such as flyovers 52, to support crash fencing or in the bases of lamposts (Fig. 4) where the tension member is formed as the lamp standard 60.
