Abstract

1300289 Recovery of Ni from Ni-Mg fines INTERNATIONAL NICKEL LTD 16 Dec 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 59773/70 Heading C7D Ni is recovered from Ni-Mg alloy fines up to 0À65 cm. size and containing up to 50% Si by mixing and fusing the fines with iron oxide, alkali metal nitrate and a flux for MgO. A Ni-Si-Fe alloy is formed with a MgO containing slag. The Ni-Mg alloy fines preferably contain 10-25% Mg, up to 50% Si and up to 12% Fe with balance Ni. The preferred flux is Si O 2 optionally with Ca F 2 and the iron oxide is FeO, Fe 2 O 3 , or Fe 3 O 4 . Up to 50% of the iron oxide addition can be replaced or an equivalent oxygen content basis by NiO. The weight ratio of iron oxide and alkali-metal nitrate to the Mg content of the alloy should be >1 and preferably 1À25:1 for the oxide and 1À4:1 for the nitrate. The molar ratio MgO:SiO 2 + FeO in the slag preferably does not exceed 1À3:1.
