Abstract
1363770 Producing copper from matte MITSUBISHI KINZOKU KOGYO KK 23 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 60011/71 Heading C7D A continuous process for producing copper from a matte comprises continuously charging the matte into a smelting furnace while blowing air, oxygen or mixtures thereof through the melt bath and adding a calcareous flux. The calcareous flux contains limestone or a mixture of silicic ore and limestone, and provides higher rates of reaction between the matte and the oxidizing agent and minimizes the content of copper oxide in the slag formed while maintaining the slag sufficiently for fluid to promote easy transfer for recycling. If siliceous flux is used ratio of SiO 2 to CaO in the flux mixture should not exceed 2:1; the flux is preferably added at a rate of 19 to 75 wt per cent of the matte being charged; and the resulting slag should contain between 9 and 15% copper, mainly in the form of oxide.
