Abstract

1309927 Reducing nickel/iron ores NIPPON YAKIN KOGYO K K 28 May 1970 [2 Feb 1970 9 Feb 1970] 25683/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division C1] Ferro-nickel is produced from Fe-rich Nicontaining materials by mixing with SiO 2 and reducing in an atmosphere having a CO/CO + CO 2 ratio of 1À6-90% at a temperature sufficient to form fayalite (Fe 2 SiO 4 ) whereby reduction of Fe is suppressed. The Nicontaining material may be laterite, garnierite, or Fe rich Ni oxide. The SiO 2 source may be pure SiO 2 or may be derived from a Ni Mg silicate ore e.g. garnierite by crushing to <150 microns, calcining at 500-800‹C., adding water to form a slurry, blowing CO 2 through the slurry at a pp of 1-20 atm and at 20-50‹C., and filtering to give a SiO 2 - containing residue. The CO/CO 2 atmosphere may be obtained using coke, coal, hydrocarbon gas or CO as reducing agent, and argon may also be present. The mixture of fayalite and ferro-nickel may be separated by crushing and magnetic separation.
