Abstract

1,266,366. Collecting oil floating on water. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 30 July, 1969 [31 July, 1968; 10 March, 1969], No. 38205/69. Heading E1H. [Also in Division C1] To remove floating oil a bag 1 filled with loose fibres 11 is towed by ropes 8 at its ends. The bag is made of non-oil-absorbent netting so that the oil passes therethrough into the interstices between the fibres. The netting may be made of polypropylene and/or polyethylene. The fibres may be nylon, P.T.F.E., rayon, polyester, glass, wool, cotton or a mixture thereof, which may be obtained from carpet trimmings or cords in discarded rubber-tyres. To prevent the fibres cohering they may be mixed with talc, diatomaceous earth, chopped fibres or perlite. The bag and the fibres may be inflammable so that they can serve as a fire barrier. The fibres may be coated with a hydrophilic agent and/or an organo philic agent.
