Abstract

Absorbent barrage for recovering an immiscible fluid (esp. oil) from a water surface comprises an absorbent mass protected by a hydrophobic film which is permeable only to the fluid to be recovered. The barrage is pref. produced by (a) mixing together 2 vols. of cork granules, 2 vols. of sawdust and 2 vols. of expanded mineral granules, (b) adding 2 vols. of an extra-fine (0.07 mu m) mineral filler hydrophobised with a fatty acid, (c) adding 1 vol. of dry screened sand to ensure dispersion of the filler over the surface of all the granules, (d) opt. adding 1 vol. of diatomaceous SiO2, and (e) placing the compsn. in a hydrophobised cloth bag or in a plastic container contg. a buoyant material.
