Abstract

1413148 Treating oil-polluted water SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 29 Sept 1972 45108/72 Heading C1C A method of treating an oil-polluted water surface to prevent the spread of the oil pollutant comprises applying to the surface a composition comprising at least one primary alcohol having 10-12 atoms per molecule and a liquid and/or solid diluent. The composition may comprise compounds having the one of the formulae: where R = alkyl having 10-15 C atoms, R<SP>1</SP> = alkyl having 4-20 C atoms, R<SP>11</SP> = alkylene having 2 or 3 C atoms, n = 1-3 and a = 1 or 2, aliphatic alcohols having up to 3 C atoms per molecule, polysaccharides, gums, carboxymethylcellulose, vinyl polymers, polyamides, polyurethanes, poly-pyrrolidone, polymethacrylates, polyacrylates, polyesters and polyolefin oxides. The composition may be encapsulated in a water soluble case or may be impregnated in rope, sponge, cloth, paper, wood, clay, plastics, or stone. After application of the composition the oil may be removed, e.g. using straw, plastics or rubber, or mechanically, and subsequently burned.
