Abstract

In a heat exchanger in which tubes 1 extend through spaced-apart fin plates 2 having slits 5, 7 therein to break up the boundary layer on the fin surface of a fluid such as air flowing over the fins, the slit 7 or slits (Fig. 2) nearest the fin edge is/are shorter than the slits 5. This is said to improve heat conduction around the ends 6 of the tube cross-section. Either the first only slit in a row, as shown, or the first two slits in a row, may be of the shortened form. Preferably alternate fin portions 9 between the slits are bent out of the plane of the fin as shown in Fig. 3.
