Abstract
1,257,861. Coating copper alloys. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 23 Dec., 1969 [3 Jan., 1969], No. 480/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C7] Copper alloys e.g. brass are treated prior to annealing in an air atmosphere furnace by applying e.g. by dipping, swabbing or spraying, a hot aqueous solution of boric acid or an inorganic borate, and evaporating the water to leave a film of boric acid or inorganic borate which is preferably more dense than 0.001g/cm<SP>2</SP>. The solutions may contain a wetting agent and suitably 2-27% w/v of boric acid. The film may be removed by cold water washing after annealing. To reduce loss of zinc from the brass, zinc oxide may be added to the aqueous solution. The film may be made self flaking by the inclusion of agents such as alkali metal phosphates or polyphosphates.
