Abstract

1291627 Derusting AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 21 Aug 1970 [25 Aug 1969] 40289/70 Heading C7E A ferriferous surface is derusted by contact with an aqueous solution containing at least 2 wt% citric acid and is subsequently phosphatised by an essentially chromic acid-free phosphatising solution. Preferred amounts of citric acid are 5-25%, but solutions up to saturation (1 part acid: 0À75 parts water) may be used. A solution for the first step of the process is claimed which comprises at least 2 wt% citric acid and isopropanol or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, the citric acid: water ratio being not more that 1:0À75. Where at least 5% citric acid is present, a conventional rust-remover such as H 3 PO 4 may be added. Optional ingredients are (a) 0À01 to 1À0% of surfactant, either non-ionic such as monylphenoxy polyethoxy ethanol or anionic, e.g. an alkylaryl sulphonate (b) an antifoam such as oleyl alcohol and (c) 0À05-2% of a thickener, e.g. methylcellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose polyoxyethylene, methylvinylether/meleic anhydride copolymer, guar gum, or gum arabic. Contact with the metal is for 2-5 minutes at 10-50‹C and the subsequent phosphatisation is, for example, zinc phosphatising preceded by an alkaline rinse.
