Abstract

1348539 Pre-treating; phosphating BALM PAINTS Ltd 12 May 1971 [25 May 1970 31 July 1970] 14447/71 Heading C7U An aqueous pre-treatment liquid for ferrous and zinc-containing metal surfaces has a pH of at least 4À5 and comprises a titanium grainrefining compound and a weight at least equal to that of the Ti in the grain-refining compound of a soluble grain-refiner stabilizer consisting of an addition copolymer of monomer (a) with monomer (b) in equimolar ratios, (a) being at least one from maleic acid, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid and citraconic acid, and (b) being at least one from ethylene, ethyl vinyl ether, methyl vinyl ether and cyclohexylvinyl ether, the copolymer having a viscosity # 3À5 cP at 25‹ C when tested as a 4 wt per cent solution in NaOH at pH 9. The concentration of titanium compound (as Ti) is preferably 0À005 to 0À05 wt per cent, and of copolymer is at least that of the Ti compound, optimum values being 0À01-0À02 wt per cent. The aqueous pre-treatment liquid may be either (1) a cleaning or etching liquid used prior to rinsing and phosphating with zinc phosphate, and which also contains alkali, e.g. Na or K carbonate, bicarbonate, or hydroxide, and possibly polyphosphate, alkali metal silicate or anionic or non-ionic surfactant or (2) a rinse liquid used after cleaning but before phosphating, which liquid comprises water and the two main ingredients specified.
