A ventilation system for an assembly room comprises plenum chambers 4 extending below desks in the room, and supplied from an underfloor source 2, air being discharged from each plenum 4 through a duct 6 having an outlet which extends along the entire front edge of the corresponding desks and is controlled by a pivoted damper 7. The duct 6 is subdivided by webs 8 and communicates with the plenum 4 through slots 5 which may include turbulence producing vanes. Air is also directed downwardly into the room through an aperture 9. Alternatively, an upward air flow from the plenum 4 into the duct 6 is arranged to induce air flow from the room through the aperture 9.
