Abstract
1,249,579. Dancing, walking figures; dolls. MATTEL Inc. 22 July, 1969 [2 June, 1969], No. 36812/69. Heading A6S. In an electrically operated dancing, walking doll, the legs 27, 28 are pivoted on the torso 17, and are caused to swing back and forth in a walking motion, by leg support members 314, 318 whose ends 316 act on cams 312 driven by the motor 25. A wheel 220, also driven by the motor, has a ball 222 attached to its circumference, said ball being engaged in a slot 306 of a torso bracket 300, so that when wheel 220 revolves, the torso rocks from side to side. When the motor revolves in one direction the rocking of the torso is such that the movement of the legs causes the figure to walk forwards, i.e. each leg supports the torso when the leg is pivoting backwards. On reversal of the motor direction, due to "backlash" in the drive couplings, the torso during its rocking motions, is supported by each leg and sometimes both legs, during substantial amounts of both their forward and backward pivoting, so that the figure does not walk forwards or backwards, but executes dancing motions. A crank 105 connects lugs 113 on the drive unit, to a transverse member 95 which causes swing- ing of the arms and pivoting of the head from side to side, in synchronization with the leg movements and the torso rocking motions. The doll can also be adapted to have no backlash when the drive motor is reversed, so that it does walk backwards in a similar manner to it walks forwards.
