1293334 Animated dolls MATTEL Inc 6 Feb 1970 [5 May 1969] 5926/70 Heading A6S A doll is operated by a mechanism which either causes the doll to walk or causes its arms to pivot about shafts joining the arms and shoulders. An oscillator bar 44 is pivoted at its lower end to the rear of a frame 30, and is caused to oscillate laterally by means of an off-centre pin (42) (not illustrated) which is mounted on a gear 40 and engages in a longitudinal slot in the bar. Drive from an electric motor 36 is transmitted to the gear 40 to cause it to rotate. A coupling 52 has two positions, one in which it may engage the frame 30, by means of a lug 60 in a slot 62, and a second in which it may engage the oscillator bar 44 by a lug 56 and a slot 58. In the first position, i.e. as shown in Fig. 2, the oscillation of the bar 44 is transferred to a shaft 66, supported in the torso 82 by bearings 68, 70, by a slot 74 and pin 72. The movement of the shaft 66 is in turn transferred to the arm by a pin 64 mounted in the shaft 66. When the coupling 52 is in the second position, i.e. the lug 56 is engaged in the slot 58, all the oscillation of the bar 44 is transmitted to the torso 82, to which mechanism 28 is attached at the rear, no motion relative to the torso is imparted to the shaft 66, and hence the torso is caused to execute a walking motion by means of which the legs, attached to the frame 30 by couplings 32, 34, are swung so as to produce' a walking motion. A model toy such as a bandalove or bat and ball may be attached to the arm to simulate the operation of such toys by a child. Also disclosed is a means by which both arms of the doll may be caused to move.
