Abstract

1,269,752. Dancing toy. MATTEL Inc. 9 April, 1970 [2 June, 1969], No. 16938/70. Heading A6S. A dancing toy, e.g. a ballerina, is operated by means of an electric motor 215 on whose output shaft is a pinion 217 driving a gear 218 which rotates freely about an idler shaft 212. Gear 218 in turn drives a gear 220 which is free to rotate about a shaft 224, and this gear drives a gear 235 which rotates freely about idler shaft 212, and gear 235 drives a gear 224 which is keyed to shaft 222. At the further end of shaft 222 is keyed a bevel gear 226 driving another bevel gear 228 which is keyed to a shaft 230, at the ends of which are cranks 231 and 232 by which means the legs are enabled to perform a stopping motion. The gear 235 is maintained in mesh with gear 224 by means of a spring 236 and these gears may be disconnected by depressing a control rod 210 at the foot of the control rod is a clutch comprising tabs 244 which locate in a slot 242 on gear 235, thus when the control rod 210 is raised then it is not connected to gear 235, but because of spring 236 the drive causes a stepping motion of the legs. However, when control rod 210 is depressed, it is connected to gear 235, but gear 235 is also depressed so that it is disconnected from the drive to the legs, thus the control rod and the body of the doll may rotate relative to one-another, and by holding the end of the rod protruding through the doll's head, the doll may pirouette about the axis of rod 210. The control rod is also associated with a switch mechanism which switches the motor on when the rod is fully up or fully down and off when in an intermediate position, and also enables reversal of the direction of drive. This mechanism is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Also, while the doll is pirouetting, by means of a mechanism illustrated in Figs. 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 (not shown) and comprising essentially a cam mechanism causing a spring to be tensioned and released, the dolls head is oscillated relative to its body.
