Abstract

1312885 Dolls IDEAL TOY CORP 17 Aug1971 [23 Oct 1970] 38467/71 Heading A6S An animated doll comprises a body with a head and at least one member, such as an arm, movable between first and second positions, a motor secured to the body, the motor having an operating cycle, and a latch means for releasably retaining the movable body member in the first position, and means operative at a selected phase of the operating cycle to drive the body member abruptly to the second position, the drive means consisting of a spring biassing the movable body member to the second position and means powered by the motor at the selected phase of the operating cycle to release the latching means whereby the spring drives the body member to the second position. The body member may be a leg or a forearm &c but as shown comprises an arm 18, 40 connected by a hinge 48 to the body 12 of a doll having a head 16 which nods continuously when a pull-string 28 has been drawn tight to wind-up a spring motor 22 and then released, the motor driving an eccentric shaft 30 which oscillates the dolls head. The hinge 48 includes a torsion spring 60 which biasses the arm to the position shown in Fig. 2, with the arm turned by the spring away from the dolls head 16. The hinge 48 also includes a latch 50a, 70a controlled by a slidable rod 70 and a trigger block 80 so arranged that the arm 40 can be turned by hand from the Fig. 2 position to the Fig. 5 position, when the dolls forearm will be, e.g. as shown in Fig. 1, in front of its mouth, where it is held by the latch. The motor pullstring 28, Fig. 5, passes through a hole 100a in the flap 100 fast with a pivoted driver 93 abutting the trigger block 80. Following release of the pull-string 28, it is drawn into the motor 22 until a bush 102 at its end abuts the flap 100, turns the latter and the driver 93 to slide the trigger block 80, thus allowing the rod 70 to slide, releasing the latch 50a, 70a so that the arm 40 flies back to the Fig. 2 position. The doll thus simulates the movement of throwing a kiss. The trigger block 80 is moved against the biass of a clicker type spring 90. Thus as the arm 40 flies back, the doll emits a noise simulating a kiss. When the string 28 is again pulled, the spring 90 retains the trigger block 80 to the Fig. 5 position, ready to latch the rod 70, &c when the arm 40 is once more returned to the Fig. 1 position. The trigger block 80 includes a spring (88), Figs. 3B, 4B (not shown), permitting sliding of the rod 70 when the arm 40 is pivoted, and by a child without damage to the mechanism. The hinge 48 also permits adjustment of the arm 40 about the axis of the rod 70, so that instead of lying adjacent the dolls mouth when in the latched position, it is instead adjacent its forehead. Thus a simulated salute may alternatively be obtained.
