Abstract

1,238,539. Power transmission for air cushion vehicle; driving marine propellers. VOSPER Ltd. 29 Sept., 1969 [8 Oct., 1968], No. 47742/68. Headings B7K and B7V. In an air-cushion vehicle one or more engines drive both the means producing cushion air and the propulsion means, either or both of these means being driven via a variable-ratio transmission. In the embodiment illustrated engine 15 runs at a substantially constant speed so that the fan 14, driven via bevel gears 17 and 18, provides a substantially constant lift; at the same time the engine drives a swash-plate pump 23 via helical gears 20 and 21. The pump 23 is connected to a swash-plate motor 25 and the two together constitute a hydrostatic transmission serving to drive water screw 28. The speed of the propeller can be varied by varying the angle of the swash-plate of the pump 23 and/or that of the motor 25. The propulsion means may alternatively be an air screw or a water-jet pump.
