(ci. 11s-37) This invention relates to submarines and has among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved construction embodying the following feature means of propulsion on the surface or when submerged.
I am aware that there are in existence at this date submarine vessels of different types, sizes and speeds with stern propulsion but I am not aware of any one uniting all the advantages present in the apparatus invented by me and which I contemplate patenting.
'I'he characteristic details of my submarine are clearly shown in the following description and accompanying drawing illustrating the same, in which the same reference signs indicate the same parts in the figure shown which is a horizontal sectional View in the plane of the propel- 1ers, which are mounted forwardly of the submarine.
The vessel as illustrated by the drawing comprises a hull 5 having forwardly extending inclined housings 6 and 'I respectively on the end of which are positioned thescrew propellers I, mounted on shafts 8 and 9, journalled in the propeller shaft bearing and stuffing boxes 2. The universally joined propeller shafts 3 areL connected to the shafts 8 and 9 and the drive shafts 68 of motor I2 through pinions 84, on the shafts B8. Pinions I on the shaft I I mesh with pinions 84 and a bevelled gear I3 fixed thereon drives the generator or dynamo 9. An energizing electric motor I haw'ng a drive shaft I4 and clutch 8| has a bevelled gear I6 on the end thereof, which meshes with bevelled gear I3, motors I2 are equipped with clutches 82, which control the rotation of shafts 68.
It will be seen therefore that a submarine characterized by the use in combination of screw propellers disposed at the bow of the vessel rotating above the center-line in combination with universally jointed lateral shafts to facilitate rapid submerging and propulsion has been provided which is simple in operation, durable in use and efficient in operation.
It is believed that the construction thereof will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes may be made therein provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoinecl claims.
I claim:
1. In submarine propulsion means, an internal combustion engine having a crankshaft, a propeller drive shaft releasably coupled with the crankshaft, an auxiliary shaft having driving connection with the propeller drive shaft, an electric drive motor having a shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft, means for disconnecting said motor shaft from the auxiliary shaft, and an electric generator having a shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft whereby during operation of the propeller by the internal combustion engine the generator is driven through the auxiliary shaft, and the propeller drive shaft designed to be disconnected from the internal combustion engine for operation through the electric drive motor and the auxiliary shaft.
2. In propulsion means for a submarine having a pair of laterally spaced propellers, a pair of internal combustion engines mounted in transversely spaced arrangement, a propeller drive shaft releasably coupled with the shaft of each internal combustion engine and in alignment with the engine shaft, an auxiliary shaft extended transversely between and having driving connection with the respective propeller drive shafts, an electric motor between and spaced from one end of said engines and having its shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft, means for releasably connecting the electric motor shaft with its driving connection with the auxiliary shaft, and an electric generator between and spaced from the other ends of the engines and having its shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft, said internal combustion engines being adapted to drive the propeller shafts and the generator when the motor is disconnected from the auxiliary shaft and being releasable from the propeller shafts for operation of the latter by the electric motor.
3. In a submarine including a hull, a pair of transversely spaced pulling propellers rotatably mounted at the forward end of the hull, a pair of motors mounted in transversely spaced relation in the hull, a pair of sectional propeller drive shafts the sections of the shafts being universally connected whereby said shafts extend outwardly and forwardly at an angle from opposite sides of the hull and then formed in line with the axis of the hull, each of said propeller shafts having one end connected with one of the propellers, means releasably connecting the opposite end of each propeller shaft with the shafts of the respective motors, and a connecting shaft extending between and having driving connection with the respective propeller shafts whereby the latter may be driven by either or both of the motors.
4. In a submarine including a hull having propeller shaftl bearings at the forward part thereof, a pair of propellers rotatably journaled on the propeller bearings, a pair of propeller drive motors mounted in transversely spaced relation in the hull, a pair of propeller drive shafts having sections universally connected and arranged to extend outwardly and forwardly at an angle from opposite sides of the hull and then forwardly in advance of the prow in line with the longitudinal axis of the hull and having their forward ends connected to the respective propellers, a clutch releasably connecting the inner end of each propeller shaft with the shafts of the respective motors, a beveled pinion fixed on each propeller shaft forwardly of the clutch, a shaft extending transversely of the hull between the propeller shafts, and a beveled pinion on each end of the transverse shaft in mesh with the respective pinions on the propeller shafts so that both of the propeller shafts may be simultaneously driven by either or both of the motors.
5. In propulsion means for a submarine having a pair of laterally spaced propellers, a pair of internal combustion engines mounted in transverse spaced arrangement, a propeller drive shaft releasably coupled with the shaft of each internal combustion engine and in alignment with the engine shaft, an auxiliary shaft between the driving shaft and having driving connection with the respective propeller drive shafts, an electric motor adjacent one end of the engine and having its shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft, means for disconnecting the electric motor shaft from the auxiliary shaft, and a generator adjacent the other end of the engine and having its shaft in driving connection with the auxiliary shaft.
