554,284. Propelling ships. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. June LOKOMOTIVUND MASCHINENFABRIK. June 1, 1942, No. 7426. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1941. [Class 114] A ship's propeller with an inclined shaft 3 is driven from a motor 1 having an axis which is horizontal, Fig. 2, or inclined at a slight angle B to the horizon. The drive passes through a reversing gear 2 and a coupling 5 comprising bevel gears 6, 7 with an equal number of teeth, and having pitch cones with markedly obtuse angles. In Fig. 3 a reduction gear 9, 10 is arranged between the gears 2, 5, and these gears are enclosed. In a further modification similar to Fig. 3 the gear 2 and gears 9, 10 are replaced by a gear comprising spur wheels 14, 15, Fig. 4, (not shown) for forward speed and further gears 16, 17, 18, Fig. 4 (not shown) for reverse speed. The coupling 5 may be placed between the motor 1 and gear 2.
