Abstract

1324799 Propelling ships OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 3 Nov 1970 52322/70 Heading B7V A stern drive unit extends through an opening in a transom 4 and comprises two sections 8 and 10 which are jointly pivotable about a horizontal shaft 45 on actuation of a piston and cylinder unit 172 to lift the screw 13 clear of the water. The section 10 is, for steering purposes, pivotable relative to the section 8 about the drive shaft 7 by actuation of a steering shaft 68. As illustrated, movement is transmitted from the steering shaft 68 to an extension 16 of the section 10 by a cable 72 which connects pulleys 70 and 64, but the connection between the steering shaft and the extension may be a gear train, Fig. 6 (not shown). The stern drive unit is mounted for rotation about the shaft 54 in apertures 33 and 34 in a housing 22. The casing of the steering shaft 68 rotates with the main body of the unit. The screw is driven by an engine 80 which, through a coupling 130 and gears 90 and 91 rotates the shaft 54. A clutch dog 164 can engage either of two bevel gears 156 and 158 so that the engine can drive the shaft 7, and thus the screw, in either direction. The engine mounting 82 is secured to the housing 22 by bolts 97 (Fig. 5) which link the mounting and its support member 92. The mounting and member 82 and 92 each have a circular array of bolt holes so that the engine can be mounted in a variety of positions, all of which are in planetary relation to the shaft 54. The engine is also mounted on the transom 4 by means of a slide 114 which is secured to a bracket 110. To allow accurate positioning of the bracket and slide prior to installation of the engine, an elongated pointer 132, Fig. 7 (not shown), may be temporarily secured to, and coaxially with, the mounting. A water pump 150, Fig. 3 (not shown), for cooling the engine is mounted on the housing 22 and is driven from the shaft 54 by a belt 145.
