Abstract

1,147,999. Outboard drives. VOLVO PENTA AB. 29 Nov., 1966 [1 Dec., 1965], No. 53305/66. Headings B7M and B7V. [Also in Division F2] In a boat propelling system wherein an inboard motor (not shown) is connected by a chain or belt 8 to an input shaft 7 at the upper end of a propeller shaft housing 5 pivotally mounted in the stern board 1 of the boat and wherein the motor exhaust gases are passed through an exhaust pipe 11 into the housing and discharged into the water, the exhaust pipe end 12 mounts a fixed or an adjustably fixed collar 14 and extends through an aperture in the wall of housing, a plastics or rubber gasket 17 being slidably received on the pipe end and interposed the collar and said wall. The connection is such that the housing is forced by propeller thrust against the gasket to provide a seal between the pipe end and the housing whilst permitting the propeller shaft housing to be pivoted freely upwards as, for instance, when striking an obstacle or when in shallow water. An adjustment screw 16 having a part spherical connection 15 with the collar permits the trim position of the housing in its operative position to be varied. The collar and gasket may be provided with an additional hole, Fig. II (not shown), to permit a motor cooling water inlet pipe (not shown) to be connected to the housing in the same manner.
