Abstract

1433430 Mounting inboard-outboard propulsion units BRUNSWICK CORP 14 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 01703/74 Heading B7V A three point mounting system for the engine of a marine inboard-outboard stern drive unit comprises two biaxially adjustable side mounts (Fig. 2) supporting the engine on its two sides and an elastomeric sealing element 25 which surrounds the housing 9 of a drive shaft 19 and is radially expanded within a passage 11 through the transom by an annular collar, which is displaced axially by bolts 27, so as to steady the engine immediately adjacent the double U-joint of the transmission system. The passage 11 may be defined by a structural element 31 of the stern drive housing (as shown) or by a structure associated with a plate located on the inboard side of the transom and to which the stern drive housing is bolted. On tightening the bolts 27, the elastomeric element 25 is squeezed between the annular collar and an annular step 23 on the outer wall of the housing 9. An annular shoulder 32 on the element 31 facilitates alignment of the engine as the annular collar initially abuts against it prior to tightening the bolts 27. The annular collar retains a bearing 22 for the drive shaft 19. Each side mount (Fig. 2) comprises a base 15 secured to the respective side of the boat's hull and an element 16 which is connected to the engine and slides on a support member 17 to permit lateral adjustment of the engine, the member 17 being in turn vertically adjustable by a bolt 18.
